Open Package Test

Learn when an opened package image reduces shopper uncertainty, how to spot an “is it used?” reaction, and what test to run next.

Open your product in the main image

Create a main image with your product opened. This test is especially useful when competing listings show closed packages.

The question this answers

Do shoppers prefer a main image with an open package?

What shoppers are asked

Shoppers see your options and are asked to pick one and explain why.

Pretend you're browsing on Amazon. Which product would you be most likely to buy? Why?

How to read the result

Wins reduce uncertainty. Shoppers say some version of “I can see what you actually get.” That is the whole benefit: an opened package answers the question a closed box leaves hanging, and it works best where competitors all show sealed product.

Watch for one specific failure: “is it used?” An opened package can read as a return or a refurb, and a shopper who thinks that will not buy at any price. If that phrase appears even twice in your responses, the execution needs work: use cleaner staging, keep the seal visibly unbroken, and arrange the contents instead of showing them spilled out.

A close result usually means the contents were not the question. If nobody was uncertain about what was in the box, opening it adds nothing. Move down the funnel.
